Opposition demands CBI probe
The Madhya Pradesh police on Monday found the body of 25-year-old trainee sub-inspector Anamika Kushwaha in a pond and said preliminary evidence suggested that she had committed suicide. Kushwaha was among those recruited by the scam-tainted Vyapam process that has affected at least 2.5 million students in the state. Kushwaha's death comes a day after the dean of a Jabalpur medical college, Arun Sharma was found dead in his Delhi hotel room and two days after a journalist covering the multi-crore cash-for-jobs racket died mid-interview on Saturday night. According to reports, 40 people related to the scam have been found dead since 2013. Opposition parties stepped up their demands for a Central Bureau of Investigation-led inquiry into the matter under the supervision of the Supreme Court while demanding Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's resignation.

Modi holds talks with Uzbek President
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held talks with Uzbekistan's President Islam Karimov on important bilateral and regional issues. The two countries signed three pacts to increase cooperation between their foreign offices and in the field of culture and tourism. Modi arrived in the capital city of Tashkent as part of the first leg of his eight-day visit to Central Asia and Russia. Modi and Karimov discussed ways to enhance strategic, economic and energy ties while also discussing regional issues such as the situation in Afghanistan.

Lalit Modi summoned by Enforcement Directorate
The Enforcement Directorate has summoned former Indian Premier League commissioner Lalit Modi to appear within three weeks for questioning in a money-laundering case against him. The case has to do with a 2008 deal regarding the television rights of the IPL. Modi, who lives in the UK, is wanted in several corruption cases in India.

Father's consent not required in guardianship
The Supreme Court on Monday ruled that unwed mothers can have full custody of a child without the father's consent. The landmark judgment also said that the mother must not be compelled to disclose the identity of the father to the authorities, maintaining her right to privacy. The judgment came in a case in where a single mother was asked to declare the name of the father or get a certificate of guardianship or adoption from the court when she tried to nominate her son to all her savings and insurance policies.

CBI told to probe ex-chief's conduct in coal scam
The Supreme Court on Monday asked former Central Bureau of Investigation special director ML Sharma to head a team to investigate the conduct of the organisation’s ex-chief Ranjit Sinha in the coal-allocation investigations. Sinha had met with some of the accused in the coal cases in his residence. The court will hear the case again on July 13.
