India projected to grow faster than China
The Indian economy is expected to grow faster than other major emerging economies, the International Monetary Fund said on Tuesday, projecting a growth rate of 7.5% for India in 2016 as against China’s 6.3%. However, the organisation said that the government should speed up structural reforms and relax supply constraints in the energy, mining, and power sectors.
UP police want action against two BJP leaders, one BSP man
The Dadri police on Tuesday sent a report to the Uttar Pradesh government recommending action against Union Minister of State for Culture Mahesh Sharma, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sangeet Som and Bahujan Samaj Party leader Naseemuddin Siddiqui for violating prohibitory orders. Superintendent of police (Rural) Sanjay Kumar Yadav said the three leaders made inflammatory remarks while addressing the villagers in defiance of prohibitory orders in force in the area. The village has witnessed a communally charged atmosphere since last Monday, when 50-year-old Mohammed Akhlaq was dragged out of his house by villagers and killed over rumours that he and his family killed a calf and eaten it.
Congress MLA, 50 others held for Varanasi violence
Congress MLA Ajay Rai was arrested along with 50 others in Varanasi on Tuesday. Rai was arrested for his alleged role in stirring up violence during a march on Monday by seers and local leaders against police action on protesters opposing a ban on immersing Ganesa idols in the Ganga river. The riots left 25 people injured.
Writer Nayantara Sahgal returns Sahitya Akademi Award
Writer Nayantara Sahgal has returned the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award, recording her protest against what she calls a “vicious assault” on India’s diversity and debate, and the government’s failure to safeguard it. Sahgal is the niece of Jawaharlal Nehru and received the literary award in 1986. In a statement explaining her decision, titled “Unmaking of India”, she refers to the recent mob killing of a Muslim man over rumours that he had eaten beef, and also the killings of rationalists MM Kalburgi, Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited two facilities of Bosch in Bengaluru on Tuesday. Merkel said that India is an important partner for Germany to renew its products and services and to be at the vanguard of technology. The Chancellor remarked that India's competence in information technology should be merged with Germany's expertise in industry to "cooperate in many areas beyond this".
