Even though the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his election campaign promised "acche din" for citizens across the country, legislators in Delhi – 67 from Aam Aadmi Party and three from the Bharatiya Janata Party – could see them before most ordinary people. An "independent panel" appointed by Delhi's AAP government has recommended that the salaries of the Members of Legislative Assembly of the national capital be raised by up to 400%. If accepted, these recommendations could make the total salary of each legislator a hefty Rs 2.10 lakh per month from the current Rs 88,000, including various allowances – the basic salary of Rs 12,000 per month has been recommended to be increased to Rs 50,000 per month – a hefty hike of over 400%.

Even though the committee has proposed that the legislators, in return, should not be given accommodation, power and water for free, the ruling AAP has been accused by the opposition of filling its own coffers.

“AAP is showing their true colours. There is a huge gap between their words and actions,” Delhi BJP Chief Satish Upadhyay told reporters. “They are not 'aam aadmi' they are definitely 'khaas aadmi' as they seek everything, from cars, big offices, and even four times the salary. They want everything.”

The AAP, on its part, points out that this is perhaps the first time that an independent panel was formed to look into the matter of legislators' remuneration rather than them deciding on their own about the increase in salaries and other allowances.

Even though AAP has maintained that it will look into the recommendations closely and only then decide about rejecting or accepting them, people on social media seem to have already made up their mind. While many on Twitter questioned the hefty hike, others jibed that rising prices have resulted in rising salaries – but only for the legislators and not the common man.
